In the Book of Romans, says Herschel Hobbs, we have “the most complete statement of the gospel found in the New Testament.”

As Paul presents it to the Roman Christians, the gospel reveals God’s righteousness. This is an activity (not an attribute) of God in which he “picks man up out of the wrong and puts him down in the right as though he had never been in the wrong.” This is what Paul calls justification. When we accept God’s action for us, through faith, then we can experience his righteousness in our lives. That is sanctification. The final phase of our relationship with God is glorification.

After his presentation of the gospel Paul shows the Romans the practiced application of this righteousness to everyday living.
